Hospital fire causes malfunction to radiology equipment

Tuesday 26 March 2013

KUCHING: The fire at Sarawak General Hospital Monday night has resulted in the malfunction of some radiology equipment and as a temporary measure some patients have been sent to the SGH Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Dr Jerip Susil said the fire, which started at the basement area involving underground cables, had affected the wiring system to the Radiology Department and also some of the oxygen supply.

“This has resulted in some equipment at the Radiology Department not working. We are sending some patients to the Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan,” he said.

He added that based on initial report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and State Health Department there was no major destruction caused except at the laundry area on the ground floor.

“Nonetheless, we hope the relevant authorities will do the overall management assessment on the damages so we can do the necessary repair,” he said.

He said this after presenting 1Malaysia Book Vouchers to 51 students of I-Systems College Kuching (ISK) here yesterday.

Dr Jerip, who is also Bengoh assemblyman, said to prevent the recurrence of the problem the underground cables had to be reassessed.

“We believe that the fire was caused by short circuits involving the underground cables but we are still waiting for the detailed report from the Fire Dept to know what exactly happened,” he said.
