KUCHING: The crime index in Sarawak dropped by 807 to 9,456 cases since January this year compared to 10,263 cases during the corresponding period last year, said State Police Commissioner Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

He, however, revealed that car theft and burglary cases had increased during the same period.

Saying that their main challenge was to maintain the crime drop and be excellent in management and administration, he also urged all district police offices in the state to take proactive measures, like increasing the number of patrols in crime-prone areas, to prevent crime cases from escalating.

“According to the crime trend, the headquarters should be doing studies and also focus on efforts to tackle cases apart from effectively preventing them,” he stressed at the police monthly assembly at the state police headquarters in Jalan Badruddin here yesterday.

Among those present were his deputy SAC Datuk Low Hong Soon, State Management head SAC Datuk Ahmad Sofian Md Yassin, State Crime Investigation Department head Datuk Pahlawan Zulkifli Hassan and State Special Branch head SAC Ibrahim Zakaria.

He noted that there was a decrease in the number of disciplinary cases involving police personnel, from 202 cases last year to 128 this year.

“I always put emphasis on discipline and I don’t compromise with any staff breaking the rules. Bribery and drug abuse can tear down our public image,” he said.
